GreyfaceRed, aka Grey, is a Filipino-American digital artist and oil painter who first started to post her works online on Tumblr during the summer of 2019. Her educational experience has earned her a certificate in Simulation & Game Design and a Bachelor’s Degree in Studio Art. While she had graduated high school at the height of the pandemic, this event was what led her to discover an online community that aided her greatly in her growth and career as an artist.Influenced by the online stickfigure creator community (more specifically, Hyun’s Dojo and Gildedguy’s creations) and Dungeons & Dragons, Grey has been encouraged to pursue her interest in character designs, worldbuilding, and comics. After the chaos of COVID-19 has calmed down, she started to attend college in-person once more and discovered a newfound passion for oil painting, where many of her skills in digital art were easily transferred to, and later, vice versa.Grey is currently working with fellow artist @dFlimbingo to create a sci-fi mystery visual novel titled VIOLA_ where she works as a major game developer, writer, and character designer.
My artwork is something I use as a tool in order to interact with the world around me and learn more about it. Something I prioritize in both my digital illustrations and my oil paintings is the amount of planning and research I do while brainstorming, making sure what I convey in my art has elements about the subject matter that not many people know about. This serves the purpose of not only educating myself and others, but it is an opener to grab someone’s attention to my art and make them think; it’s a method that is the visual equivalent of using a fun fact as an icebreaker to get a conversation going. When thinking up a new character to design on Clip Studio Paint or a new series of oil paintings on canvas, I use the overall composition and color scheme to set the tone and draw people in. Bright colors, texture, and familiar or fantastical imagery are all taken into account to convey the emotions of the scene before them. What I use to keep people captivated with my works are the little details that they will find upon closer inspection. In my comics, a character’s name and hair color could foreshadow what could happen to them later. With my paintings, someone could look carefully and see who is losing badly at a game of cards or notice a subtle internet reference hidden in the background. The texture of a cloth can determine if an object is old and worn or new and luxurious, the position of a person’s arms can convey if they are confident or closed off.Using the bigger picture to establish the mood and using smaller details to hint at what is going on is what allows me to tell a story beyond just using words, leaving a lasting effect on a person as though they were walking out of a movie theater after watching a really good movie. An approach to art like this allows me to make art about anything I want, from whimsical, slice-of-life scenes to dark, dramatic storylines. To identify as an artist who has mastered both digital and traditional mediums is something I take pride in, being able to show off my range in what I can do. Versatility is a skill I will always value in any skillset. Because of this, I want to continue to expand my range, to learn about everything and create art about everything I know. Having an ambition like this means that I can’t keep myself boxed into one genre with the stories I tell, nor one specific subject matter or theme.Slice-of-life, shared meals, action, and gods, these are all familiar territory that helped me appreciate what I grew up with. I’m going to come back to them, but I’m going to do so by challenging myself with new genres such as horror, supernatural, and historical, which call for all sorts of new themes and painting techniques that will come with it. The only thing that will stay constant with my works from then on will be how I use them to tell the stories I want others to hear.

An oil pastel on paper illustration featuring a finely dressed man ravenously indulging in a dish known as the ortolan bunting. This dish is considered a delicacy in fine dining but also banned across America and Europe due to the songbird's sharp decline in population. Preparation of the dish includes gruesome methods such as overfeeding the bird and drowning it in boiling brandy, then served to be eaten whole. When consuming the bird, people often wear cloth over their heads as a tradition to hide their sin of gluttony from the eyes of God.Despite the dish being banned, the bird is still illegally hunted and served primarily in France. The pose of the man here is to mirror "Saturn Devouring his Son" by Francisco Goya.
